Rights and Responsibilities: The Holocaust; before Concentration Camps
Junior Division
By Em Marmer
When most people think of the Holocaust and what went on during that time, many think of the concentration & death camps and how millions of people were killed there. However, what most do not realize, is that this was not the beginning of the persecution against these peoples. Especially in Germany, during the years from 1933 to 1945, the Nazi Party, led by the belief that the Germans were an inferior race and that any one, or any race who threatened this "purity" needed to be eliminated, striped the Jews and other minorities such as the disabled, the mentally ill and the gypsies, of rights including the right to an education and livelihood. This was able to happen primarily because the Nazi's did not fulfill their responsibilities as leaders of Germany, but also because many gentiles and others who were not affected, did not try to stop the Nazis and take a stand. |
A Nazi belt buckle with the slogan "Blood and Honor" used to refer to racial "purity."
